<image:caption>The “(in)dispensable project” is an ongoing social engagement-art project documenting individuals working in the solid waste + recycling industry in turkey. This project was a collaborative venture between artist, Heidi K. Brandow + designer Sinem Sayar. Creative institution and community outlet, Circuit Istanbul, served as a host and showcased this project in March 2018. It is an ongoing collaborative project that involves higher educational partnerships that incorporate creative interventions proposed by college students from Istanbul. A short-film that documents this project and the community collaborators is currently in the development stages and is expected to commence in late 2018 through early 2019.</image:caption>

      <image:title>portfolio - This Land/This Body, 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>Commission: Tia Collection Site: Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, NM Dimensions: 34 ft x 11 ft The mural “This Land/This Body” explores the intricate connection between Hawaii's native flora and fauna and the challenges Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) endure. Our ancestral lands, along with the health of these lands and their native species, mirror the well-being and displacement issues of Native Hawaiians. Historically, Native Hawaiian communities have suffered from land dispossession, which has led to the erosion of our language, cultural practices, and community cohesion. This dislocation is driven by factors such as development, economic pressures, invasive settlers, and the historical consequences of the illegal overthrow and ongoing occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Through this artwork, I hope to capture the beauty and vitality of Hawaii, as well as the delicate balance needed to preserve our native plants, animals, and people in their homeland.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As part of the Venice Indigenous Arts School, this public program will focus on the theoretical underpinnings of developing keywords in Indigenous arts. Often, these terms have no equivalence in Western arts terminology and, therefore, constitute a new means of contextualizing Indigenous arts, one that is centered on Indigenous ways of knowing. This public program continues the discussion of contemporary Indigenous arts terminology with a focus on the application of this new lexicon within various arts discourses, such as art history, theory, and criticism from the perspective of artist practitioners. The show is a dimensional biography of the Santa Fe-based artist’s life, uniting friends and mentors who have shaped her path. Conceptual and aesthetic influences flow in every direction, offering new context for each artist’s work. “The artists I chose are asking a lot of the same questions, and not accepting the status quo of what art or Native art should be,” Brandow says. The exhibition serves as a tribute to Jeff Kahm, Brandow’s former professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts, who passed away in March 2021.
